info & explanation

winged

For this assignment, we were given an array of objects that represented materials that were available to us in the sculpture studio. This concept of a winged figure rose out of my own situation. Not only am I out of my nest for a semester, but in a broader sense am leaving a place of childhood and protection and facing the outer world.

made of: brown paper bag, cloth, wire netting, stick, clay, foam, hot glue, paint

nest

made of: branches, berries all found on site.

This continued along the same theme as "winged". A nest is a place of rest, a home. I constructed it in a rocky, barren area. The red berries symbolize life and vitality.

stick figures

With this piece I explored the idea of man's relationship to nature. It seems that there are two sides of humankind: the industrial, materialistic, and progressive man versus the natural, organic, and slower paced man. Are these two sides in battle? Are they in harmony? The work came together in a series of photographs that portray different aspects of this relationship. The unintended (but inevitable) fragility of the natural figure also speaks to our present situation.

made of: copper, natural materials found on site (grass, leaves, twigs, stems, etc.)

map

made of: butcher paper, tracing paper, oil, oil pastels, cray-pas, China marker, permanent marker, pencil, rubber cement.

Katy Stone taught us a innovative way to create work. In her class, I created sixty abstracted drawings of a shell in one hour. Drawing so quickly caused me to focus on individual areas or qualities of the shell instead of the entire object as a whole. It also moved my drawings from the purely representational to the abstract. This process essentially created the medium to work with; I layered and connected these different drawings into one piece, which focused on connecting line and creating depth through layering. I then did another session of quick drawings based off a stick, and united this piece (the top portion) into one coherant artwork. When put up against a light source, it transforms the piece.
